Marina Beach
Marina Beach is a beach in the city of Chennai (Madras), India.

Chennai's major tourist attraction Marina Beach, along the Bay of Bengal, part of the Indian Ocean is among the longest beaches in the world. A visit to the Marina Beach is an enchanting experience for a traveller.


The 13 km long Marina Beach forms the city's east coast, from Fort St. George all the way to Mahabalipuram and is one of the longest beaches in the world. This beach was given a makeover by Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff in the early 1880's.

With its natural sandy beauty and spacious promenade and beautiful gardens, the Marina beach is a major attraction for tourists visiting Chennai.

In the evenings, the beach turns into a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the beach. One can even shop around the beach, buying shell and glass baubles to kites and fruit juices. The Marina, is also the venue for important state functions, accommodate a good number of visitors. There are also facilities of pony rides at the beach site, which attract the children's interest the most.

The stretch is also home to various governmental institutions and historic buildings from the British rule such as the University of Madras, Senate-House, Chepauk Palace, Presidency College, P.W.D office and Ice House are located on the beach drive.
In between, sentinels on the promenade, there are many statues adorn the roadside along the beach which includes statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Kannagi, Thiruvalluvar, Sir Thomas Munro, Kamarajar, Avvaiyar, Thanthai Periyar and the Statue of Labour.
Situated on the beach, the Anna and MGR Samadhis, which are the memorials of the most popular, former Chief ministers of the state; attracts a good number of visitors everyday.

At the southern end of the Marina Beach is the new Light House. It stands 48m above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the city. The light house is open to visitors from 2pm to 4pm.
Aquarium is located close to the Marina beach, which has some of the most exotic collection of tropical sea fishes and fresh water fishes.
The Ice House, which was used to store ice brought from Great Lakes in North America, is south to the Aquarium in 1840 for 30 years. Later in 1892, it became a home to Swami Vivekananda and the name was changed to Vivekananda house.


On 26th December, 2004 Tsunami claimed a lot of lives in the beach. Despite the destruction caused by the Tsunami waves, the beach has regained its pristine beauty because of the hardworking community.
